Style 1900 is a quarterly magazine, published on or about the 1st of February, May, August and November. We publish articles on the Arts & Crafts movement and related aspects of late-19th and early-20th-century design. The magazine is sold by subscription, and by individual copy at bookstores and specialty shops. Our Audience: Enthusiasts, collectors, connoisseurs, historians, universities, museums, libraries.
Writer's Qualifications:
Considerable knowledge of his/her subject; willingness to conduct detailed research; willingness to accept and implement editorial changes.
First Time Contributor:
First, call or submit a brief email to Editor-in-Chief Anne Stewart O’Donnell (anne@Style1900.com) describing your topic. If interested, she will ask you for more details including a 250 word summary; complete bibliography; photocopies or thumbnails of illustrations that will appear in the article; a resume or brief biographical statement establishing your expertise. The summary will be considered a writing sample and should be generally consistent with the style of other articles in Style 1900. Editor will contact writer by e-mail or telephone regarding acceptance. Proposals and unsolicited manuscripts will not be returned.
Length of article:
Length of feature articles: 1800-2200 words (6 to 10 pages in magazine), including captions, sidebars, endnotes, brief (25 word or less) author’s biographical statement, and brief (25 word or less, optional) acknowledgements. Proposal and article will be judged and edited for: validity and freshness of ideas, quality of research, logic, visual evidence, use of language, grammar, punctuation, etc. If extensive rewrites are necessary, the article will be returned to the writer for revision. The final form of the article will be determined by the editor of Style 1900 and is non-negotiable.
Timing:
Deadline for completed article and illustrations is four months prior to publication, or as arranged with editor.
Illustrations:
High-resolution jpgs or tiffs preferred; color slides, transparencies, professional prints. Call editor to discuss details; MANY ELECTRONIC FORMATS ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR PUBLICATION. Writer must obtain all permissions to publish photographs and images from owners or copyright holders.

Format for submission of proposals and articles:
Preferred: e-mail as a word document that can be opened on a PC with Microsoft Word 2002, or mail CD or DVD disc readable on PC with Microsoft Word 2002. Hard copy and illustrations to follow by mail (for proposal), by FedEx or other traceable carrier for completed article.
Article Payment:
Generally $500.00 for a full length article, payable upon publication. For illustrations: Discuss with editor.
Illustrations Payment:
Not to exceed $200.00; payable upon submission of receipts.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
All proposals and articles are submitted on speculation. Approval does not guarantee publication and may be withdrawn if the final article and illustrations do not meet publication standards. The editorial board of Style 1900 reserves the right to make all final decisions regarding publication of the article.
